Ban the Box clears last hurdle in Washington State Legislature

March 9, 2018

OLYMPIA – Washington businesses would not be able to ask new job applicants if they have a criminal record under legislation that received final legislative approval Saturday.

The House sent to Gov. Jay Inslee the final version of the “Ban the Box” bill, which does not allow initial job applications for most positions to ask whether a potential employee has been convicted of a crime. Employers could ask about any criminal history in follow up interviews.

Supporters said the bill allows a chance to get through the door to an applicant who has served time after a criminal conviction.
